Where Do I Even Start Decluttering?
Dear Sweet Friend,
If you’re looking around your home thinking, “I’m 66 years old. I have 40 years’ worth of stuff from raising kids. I’ll never get this whole house decluttered… what’s the point?”—I want you to know something.
I read these words on many posts each week of how on earth will I declutter the whole house and, and maybe you’ve whispered them to yourself too.
But here’s the truth…
You don’t have to declutter 40 years today.
You just have to take the first baby step.
One of the greatest gifts I’ve learned in the dozens of books I’ve read is that we should give ourselves permission to stop trying to tackle the whole house at once. Instead, set a 15-minute timer and choose one small space. Maybe it’s a junk drawer, one kitchen counter, or a single shelf in the closet. That’s it.
When the timer goes off, you’re finished for today. And, I sigh a relief.
Tomorrow is a new day, and you can choose to declutter another small space.
Those little pockets of progress may not seem like much at first, but day after day they begin to transform not only your home, but also how you feel when you walk through it.
Sweet friend, your home wasn’t filled in a weekend, and it won’t be decluttered in one either. Give yourself the same grace you’d give your best friend.
Don’t let the size of the journey keep you from taking the first step.
Today, set your timer for 15 minutes.
Choose one small space.
Then thank yourself for showing up.
Because a peaceful home isn’t created in one giant burst of motivation—it’s built one faithful step at a time.
xoxo Flo
