Why I Love the Mediterranean Diet Menu Plan
Hello my friend!
Can we sit down for a minute? I want to tell you why I changed the way I eat, and I want you to hear it as an invitation, not a lecture. Nobody needs another list of foods they’re doing wrong.
A Mom Later In Life
Here’s my truth: I haven’t had kids yet. I’m going to become a mom later in life, and sometimes the thing we most long for seems to take its own sweet time getting to us. I know that feeling, friend, and if you know it too, I see you.
But here’s what I’ve realized while I wait: whenever that day comes, I want to already be the kind of strong, energized mom who can keep up. So somewhere along the way, my “why” shifted. It stopped being about avoiding what’s bad for me and started being about actually feeding my body food that gives me energy now- because I’m building the body I’ll need for the people I love, even before they get here. That’s it. That’s the whole motivation.
I Started Paying Attention To How Sugar Made Me Feel.
I’ve done my share of “no sugar” challenges over the past five years, and I noticed something every single time: when I cut back on the donuts, cookies, cakes, and treats, I simply felt better. Clearer. Calmer. Less foggy, less up-and-down.
Have you ever noticed that too? If so, you already know more than you think you do about what your body needs.
A Conference, A Speaker, And A Question I Couldn’t Shake.
About a year ago I went to a two-day women’s conference at friends church, and one of the speakers worked in healthcare. She talked about the Mediterranean diet- not as a trend, not as a quick fix, but as a way of eating that’s been studied for decades because it actually holds up.
That got my attention because I am so tired of trends.
Here’s The Best Part: You Don’t Have To Count A Single Calorie.
I know myself. Tracking every bite doesn’t work for me, and if it doesn’t work for you either, that does not mean something is wrong with you. It might just mean you haven’t found your way yet.
The Mediterranean diet isn’t a rulebook. It’s simply filling your plate with vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fish- and letting the sugary, processed stuff become the occasional treat instead of the everyday habit. Nothing extreme. Nothing you have to earn.
If you’ve ever looked at a Mediterranean diet menu plan and felt overwhelmed before you even started, I want you to hear this: it’s simpler than it looks. It’s a shift in what you reach for most, not a whole new set of rules. I’ll be sharing my own weekly menu plan soon so you can see it on a real table, for a real family, on a real budget- baby steps, just like everything else around here.
Why This Matters To Me, Long Term.
I’m not chasing a trend, I’m focusing on good health and years. Here’s what kept showing up in the research as I read more:
Blood sugar. Eating this way may help keep blood sugar steadier, especially paired with a little regular movement. I don’t have diabetes, but I know an even keel matters for energy, and I’ve already felt the difference myself.
My heart. People who eat Mediterranean-style tend to have healthier cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Heart disease runs high on the list of things that take people from their families too soon, and I don’t want to ignore that.
My mind. I want to stay sharp- learning, creating, showing up- for a long time. Some research points to this way of eating supporting memory and lowering dementia risk as we age. That felt worth investing in.
My family history. This is the one closest to my heart. Cancer runs in my family, and I’ve watched a few people I love have it come back after they thought they were through it. That’s not a distant statistic to me- that’s real, and it’s part of why I made this switch. There’s no magic food that prevents cancer, I know that. But from what I’ve read it seems people eating Mediterranean-style tend to have a lower risk of certain cancers, and I’ll take every bit of encouragement I can get.
You Are Not Behind.
I want to say this to you plainly, because I know how easy it is to hear “healthy eating” and immediately feel like you’re already failing.
You are not behind, my friend. There is no start date you missed. This is not about perfection- it’s about better choices, most of the time. Baby steps.
An apple instead of a cookie.
Olive oil instead of butter, when you think of it.
One more vegetable on the plate at dinner.
Fish a couple times a week.
None of those things are extreme on their own. But string enough of them together and you’ve got a whole new way of eating, without ever having to overhaul your life in one day.
The Real Reason, Underneath It All.
I’m not doing this to chase a trend. I’m doing this because I want to take good care of the body God gave me, so I have the energy to enjoy my life, love my people, and hopefully stick around for a long, long time.
If you’re standing where I was, wondering if it’s worth trying- I hope you’ll take one small step today. You don’t have to overhaul your whole kitchen tonight. One better choice at dinner is enough to start. That’s how all of this starts, every time.
xoxo Flo
A little disclaimer, friend: I’m not a doctor, dietitian, or medical professional- just someone who’s done her own reading and paid attention to how my own body feels. Everything I’ve shared here is my personal experience and understanding of the research, not medical advice. Please talk to your doctor before making any changes to your diet, especially if you have a health condition or family history you’re managing. Take care of you.
